Citizens invited to participate in CityArts’ cultural celebration

CityArts is making plans for its 11th annual Day of the Dead exhibit and inviting area individuals, groups and artists to participate. Altars and tributes of any type – traditional to contemporary art-inspired – may be included, and the deadline to sign up is Wednesday, Oct. 27. The limited-run show will be on display in CityArts’ Main Gallery Oct. 29-30 and Nov. 1-2 during regular gallery hours.

Day of the Dead or “El Dia de los Muertos” is a longstanding Mexican holiday that honors and celebrates the lives of those who have passed away. Each year, CityArts’ Day of the Dead exhibit includes a mix of altars and tributes created by a cross-section of Wichitans to honor family members as well as public figures or celebrities who left a lasting mark on their lives.

“This is an important event for CityArts because it gives artists and art lovers the opportunity to educate themselves and gain an appreciation for the imagery that surrounds this significant cultural event,” said CityArts director David Murano. “It’s also a time when Hispanic residents can see how those outside of their culture observe the holiday.”

The altars themselves are works of art that often include fresh fruit and flowers, photos, ceramic-like sugar skulls, candles and items that have a special connection to the deceased. Day of the Dead is celebrated annually by Latin Americans in conjunction with All Saints’ Day (Nov. 1) and All Souls’ Day (Nov. 2).

Individuals interested in participating in Day of the Dead should contact CityArts Gallery Director Tabitha Bean at (316) 462-2787, ext. 791.
