Saturday Oct. 10 at Chapin Park

The Wichita Park and Recreation Department and the Wichita Fire Department will hold a dedication ceremony at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 9 at Chapin Park, 2400 East MacArthur (near Hydraulic and MacArthur, north of Emery Park). The dog park zone of Chapin Park will be renamed “Arson Canine Ashley’s Memorial Dog Park.”

The dog park includes plenty of open space, shade structures, doggy doo bags, water bowls, park benches and time out areas. Many additional features are planned in the near future including water fountains for both humans and dogs.

“We are extremely happy to be able to honor the Fire Department’s Canine Section in this way, especially during Fire Prevention Week,” said Doug Kupper, Wichita Park and Recreation Department director.

The first arson canine, Ashley, came to the Fire Department through State Farm Insurance Company. Ashley served from 1994 to 1999, when she was forced to retire due to medical problems. Ashley worked 161 fire scenes resulting in 33 felony arrests for arson, aggravated arson and homicide. Ashley’s most high profile case was the Michael Marsh trial. Marsh was convicted in the deaths of his wife and child. Ashley located key evidence that led to his conviction.
