Input needed from arts sector, general public

The City of Wichita is hosting a Local Arts Forum at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 27, in Mary Jane Teall Theatre at the Century II Performing Arts and Convention Center. Arts organizations, artists, students, businesses owners, community leaders and residents from all backgrounds are invited to take part in this community conversation about arts in the Wichita area. It will be facilitated by John D’Angelo, the Arts & Cultural Services Division Manager.

Following the publication of the National Arts Index earlier this year by Americans for the Arts, a wealth of information has been circulating nationally about the health and vitality of the arts industries as a whole. During the forum, D’Angelo will delve into the report’s findings and explain why Wichitans should be paying attention to the changes occurring in the visual and performing arts environments.

“This discussion offers an opportunity to bring the national art focus down to the local level,” D’Angelo said. “It allows us to see where Wichita fits in with national trends and to take proactive steps to sustain and grow our arts sector.”

Topics to be discussed include how technology is changing the way people are participating/consuming the arts and the need for arts organizations to find innovative, creative and diverse ways to attract audiences.

The Local Arts Forum is one step the City is taking to engage the community-at-large and the arts sector in meeting future challenges. In addition, work has already begun on a Local Arts Index, which is sponsored by Americans for the Arts as a follow-up to its National Arts Index. Wichita was one of 100 communities selected to participate. Findings will be released in fall 2011.
