The City of Wichita, in conjunction with the Wichita Downtown Development Corporation (WDDC), on Thursday announced the release of the final draft of “Project Downtown – the Master Plan for Wichita,” a 20-year blueprint for the revitalization of downtown Wichita.
The Project Downtown document is available at www.wichita.gov and www.downtownwichita.org. The Metropolitan Area Planning Commission will hold a public hearing to consider adoption of the plan at 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 18 in the 10th Floor Conference Room of City Hall, 455 N. Main.
“Project Downtown outlines specific priorities and establishes an action plan for developing downtown, and we look forward to seeing the plan move forward,” said Mayor Carl Brewer.
The plan identifies market demand for as much as $500 million in private-sector capital investment over the next 15-20 years that would result in an estimated 1,500-1,600 new housing units, 125,000-175,000 square feet of retail space, 400,000-480,000 square feet of office space, and 350-475 hotel rooms. The plan also outlines 43 action steps for accomplishing this revitalization potential through efforts focused on creating unique downtown places, expanding transportation choices and enabling development. An estimated $100 million in parking, streets, and parks/open space improvements are recommended to be made in conjunction with the private-sector revitalization projects.
“Project Downtown reflects the community’s vision for a vibrant downtown and we believe it will unlock the private sector potential of our city center,” said Jeff Fluhr, president of WDDC.
Project Downtown is a public-private partnership of the City of Wichita, the Wichita Downtown Development Corporation and Visioneering Wichita. The year-long development effort was led by the Boston-based Goody Clancy planning team. The plan was funded by the City of Wichita, WDDC and more than 40 individuals and businesses.
