Steampunk Expo at Cowtown

Angela Cato, Arts & Cultural Services | | (316) 462-2787, ext. 742

Visitors to get taste of Victorian science fiction

The Emerald City Steampunk Expo will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Old Cowtown Museum, 1865 W. Museum Blvd.

Steampunk is described as a technically advanced, alternate history where steam power is widely used and anything can exist including flying ships and time machines – as long as they’re mechanically made with gears and cogs. Nothing digital can be found in this science-oriented world.

Visitors will experience a science fiction version of a growing, re-imagined Victorian world. Hundreds of Steampunk fans from several states will wear costumes and enjoy fire breathing acts, juggling, contortion displays, dueling with swords, costuming workshops and more.

“For Cowtown, this is something entirely different,” Cowtown Director David Flask said. “Through more unique and diverse events, we’re not only reaching out to new groups, but also giving the general public more reasons to visit Cowtown.”

Steampunk conventions are generally held in hotels around the world, and Cowtown has the distinction of being the first-ever non-hotel setting. Plans are already underway to hold a three-day 2011 Emerald City Steampunk Expo in Wichita.

Admission to the Expo is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 5-10 and free for children 4 and under. For more information, call (316) 219-1871 or go to
