The Wichita City Council will consider a motion tomorrow to suspend the rules of procedure in order to fill the District III vacancy in an expedited manner. The Council will be asked to add the vacancy proposal as a “New Business” item. The regularly scheduled consent agenda/workshop will take place at 9:30am in the first floor boardroom of City Hall, 455 N. Main.
If the proposal receives approval tomorrow the following steps will be taken:
- Residents living in District III must gather 100 signatures and file for the District III seat.
- The District III Advisory Board will interview the candidates and make a recommendation to the Wichita City Council.
- The City Council will interview the candidates.
- The City Council will vote by written ballot during a Council meeting.
District III Council Member Jim Skelton will take office early next year as a Sedgwick County Commissioner. Skelton will also submit his resignation to the City Council tomorrow with an effective date of Dec. 29. The earliest the new, temporary District III Council Member could take office is January 4, 2011. Voters will elect a District III Council Member in the April 5, 2011 election who will serve the remaining two years left in Council Member Skelton’s term.
