Century II renovations a factor

The City of Wichita and Theater League today announced that THE LION KING will be coming to Wichita in fall 2012 as a result of continuing improvements to Century II Concert Hall. THE LION KING will headline the 2012-13 Theater League season. Members of Theater League’s upcoming 2011-12 season will get the first opportunity to purchase tickets. Ticket prices, public on sale and performance dates will be announced at a later time. All performances will take place in Concert Hall.

Nearly $950,000 of renovations to Concert Hall was completed last year and more are coming in 2011 to accommodate larger and more complex shows. The City’s financial investment in Century II was a determining factor in Disney’s decision to commit to Wichita.

"Wichita’s theater audience has reason to be excited," said John D’Angelo, manager of the City’s Division of Arts & Cultural Services. "THE LION KING is a cultural phenomenon and one of the most popular stage musicals in the world. Century II is thrilled to offer its patrons this world-class experience."

Theater League has presented touring Broadway productions at Century II for the past eight years, including the highly successful run of WICKED in 2009 that sold more than 41,000 tickets, resulting in $3.13 million in total sales. Theater League’s 2011-2012 season includes Rock of Ages, Blue Man Group and Mamma Mia! A fourth show will be announced later.

The City is in the midst of $22 million worth of upgrades to the facility to keep it in line with current industry standards. Century II tenants – Wichita Symphony, Music Theatre of Wichita and Wichita Grand Opera – will also benefit from these changes.
