New Cameras to Combat Graffiti, Illegal Dumping

Lt. Doug Nolte | | (316) 268-4231

The Wichita Police Department announced today they have a new tool to help prevent and prosecute graffiti and illegal dumping--the FlashCAM, digital camera. The cameras have the ability to capture clear, high resolution images and can read license plates 250-feet away in total darkness. The cameras are solar powered and built to resist vandalism.

“We are hoping to reduce the number of vandalisms and other street crimes using this tool,” said Deputy Chief Tom Stolz the Investigations Division Commander. The City currently spends between $250,000 and $500,000 a year cleaning up graffiti, and picking up and disposing illegally dumped items.

Several cities have successfully utilized the FlashCAMs including Chattanooga, TN; Las Vegas, NV; El Cajon, CA. To learn more about the FlashCAMS visit

The City of Wichita purchased the pole cameras with funds through American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The cameras and associated equipment cost $28,000.
