A 68-year-old woman died from injuries suffered during a fire in her home early this morning. Thirteen Units from the Wichita Fire Department responded to a call to check smoke in a duplex at 2:10 a.m. today, at 2019 N. Ridgewood. Crews located smoke coming from the adjacent duplex, 2021 N. Ridgewood. After entering the residence, WFD crews encountered fire in the living room and found the victim on the floor just inside the front door. The victim was removed from the home and transported to Wesley Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 3:43 a.m.
The Fire Investigation Unit determined the fire originated in the living room. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, pending an autopsy and other investigation activities. This is the second fire fatality this year.
Fire damage was estimated at $20,000 to the structure and $10,000 loss to the contents.
