Combining art/architecture topic of second lecture this Saturday

The City of Wichita will host a lecture on “Design and Integrated Art in the Built Environment” from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday in Century II Mary Jane Teall Theater, 225 W. Douglas. Presenters will speak about private and public projects going on throughout the country that have integrated art into the design of buildings, bridges, plazas, community spaces, etc. They will also give insight into where Wichita falls nationally in its beautification efforts. This is the second of six presentations included in the City’s “Arts & Culture Industry Lecture Series.” It is free and open to the public.

Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer is scheduled to open the program with Tim Austin, chairman of the Design Council, an advisory group to the Wichita City Council. Austin will also lead the panel discussion. He will be joined by these professionals: Vicki Scuri, a Seattle-based public artist and environmental designer; Barbara Luecke, a Seattle-based public arts program and project manager; Roger Brown, senior vice president, Law/Kingdon Architecture; Jeff Fluhr, CEO, Wichita Downtown Development Corp.; and Kent Williams, local environmental artist.

Audience members will be encouraged to provide comments and ask questions so that everyone can leave with an enhanced understanding of what it takes to build a beautiful and livable city that encourages economic development, attracts young people and creates a sense of culture.

The purpose of the entire Arts & Culture Industry Lecture Series is to bring the community together to discuss how local arts organizations and artists can successfully adapt to the changing arts environment. Lectures will continue throughout the summer and fall with remaining topics on: Building New Leadership, New Arts and Cultural Business Models, and Philanthropic Trends.
