Sister Cities Event on Monday

Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer is scheduled to participate in a Sister Cities video conference that will highlight the 13-day tour of Tlalnepantla bicyclists and promote cultural exchange through school-to-school communication.

The video conference is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Monday in the City Council Conference Room at City Hall, 455 N. Main.

Mayor Arturo Ugalde Meneses and the Gabriela Mistral School of Tlalnepantla, Mexico will communicate via Skype with Mayor Brewer, Wichita City Council Members and Wichita Area Sister Cities members.

The Tlalnepantla bicyclists arrived in Wichita on Thursday evening after travelling 1,633 miles to raise awareness about the Sister Cities program.

Sister Cities International is a nonprofit citizen diplomacy network that creates and strengthens partnerships between the United States and international communities. More than 2,000 cities, states and counties are partnered in 136 countries around the world. The organization aims to build global cooperation at the municipal level, promote cultural understanding and stimulate economic development. The program originated in 1956 when President Dwight D. Eisenhower proposed a people-to-people, citizen diplomacy initiative.
