Delta Air Lines Announces Service Changes

6/8/2011
Valerie Wise, Air Service & Business Development Manager | VWise@wichita.gov | (316) 946-4700

Beginning Thursday, Delta Air Lines will add a fourth daily nonstop flight from Wichita to Minneapolis. Delta’s expanded service to Minneapolis provides more options for convenient connecting service to 135 destinations worldwide. At Wichita, the service will be provided by Delta connection carriers.

Minneapolis offers 14 nonstop international flights, including destinations in Europe and Asia, compared with just two international flights at Memphis, another Delta connection. Minneapolis offers more convenient connecting service to West Coast destinations, while Atlanta continues to offer an expansive array of East Coast, Southeast and international destinations for Wichita travelers.

Delta and the industry overall will shrink domestic capacity this year in response to higher fuel prices. High fuel prices are expected to cost Delta an additional $3 billion this year. Delta will reduce Memphis flying by 25 percent, with numerous cities seeing reductions in frequencies, and several cities losing service entirely. Delta will continue to offer daily service between Wichita and Memphis, but with one daily nonstop flight instead of two, which is the current schedule. The reduction will be effective September 6, 2011.

Delta will operate 10 peak-day flights this fall and winter from Wichita, the same as its 2010 schedule, serving Atlanta, Minneapolis and Memphis.
