Wichita Park and Recreation Department will celebrate Wichita’s national recognition as a Playful City, USA winner with four weekend outdoor activity events in June and July. The first outdoor activity event, known as SaturPlay, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday at Fairmount Park, 1647 N. Yale.
SaturPlay is a free recreation event designed to encourage families to be active and to spend time together outdoors. The event includes races, obstacle courses, parachute games, jump roping and an imagination station. Additional SaturPlay events are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the following dates:
- June 25 – Buffalo Park, 10201 Hardtner (west)
- July 9 – Cessna Park, 6115 E. Mt. Vernon (east)
- July 23 - O.J. Watson Park, 3022 S. McLean Blvd. (south)
“This is a fun and engaging way for us to promote healthy lifestyles in our community by increasing play opportunities for youths, adults and families,” said Doug Kupper, Director of the Park and Recreation Department. Playful City USA, sponsored by KaBOOM!, honors cities and towns committed to increasing “play” opportunities. In 2010, KaBOOM! recognized 118 cities.
