Budget proposes raising fares, ending Saturday service
Wichita Transit will hold a public hearing on proposed fare and service changes at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 455 N. Main.
Due to a $1 million budget shortfall, City of Wichita officials are proposing a 50 cent increase for fixed-route fares, a dollar increase for paratransit fares and the elimination of Saturday service for fixed route and paratransit services. The rate structure for passes would increase, accordingly. Rate increase and service change must be approved by the Wichita City Council.
The Transit Department is experiencing an increase in fuel prices, which has contributed to the budget deficit. If the proposed changes are approved by the City Council, the service change will take effect Sept. 3; the fare increases, Sept. 6.
Comments regarding the proposed rate and service changes can be mailed to Wichita Transit, 777 E. Waterman, Wichita, KS 67202 or by calling 265-1450.
Transit service will be available after Thursday’s public hearing.
