A public forum on the “Complete Streets” concept is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today at the Kansas University School of Medicine-Wichita, 1010 N. Kansas. The forum will explore a new vision for urban street design in Wichita and features national “Complete Streets” expert Roger Henderson. Members of the local planning and public works staffs will also participate.

The event begins with a reception in the lobby of the Roberts Amphitheater on the KUSM-W campus, including a display of streetscape posters. The discussion begins at 6:30 p.m. Public comments and questions will be taken at the conclusion of the forum.

The “Complete Street” concept provides for flexible design strategies and policies to help balance the needs and safety for all users including pedestrians, the disabled, transit riders, and bicyclists. It is regarded as a primary building block for sustainable communities. Some of the concepts have been included in the Wichita Downtown Master Plan and are being considered for additional developments in other areas of Wichita.

There is no charge for the event, but a courtesy registration can be logged at the GreenWichita website. The event is co-sponsored by the City of Wichita and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Follow-up sessions for City Council members, staff and other individuals involved in policy development are scheduled for Friday in City Hall, 455 N. Main. The first Friday workshop session will be from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. in the City Council Boardroom on the first floor of City Hall; the second workshop will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Planning Department Conference Room on the 10th floor at City Hall.
