Reduce water usage through Friday morning
City of Wichita officials are asking residents and business owners to postpone watering lawns and washing cars through Friday morning. The temporary request comes after a well field power outage early Thursday morning caused a significant loss of water production. The power outage in northwest Sedgwick County prevented 20 million gallons of water from being pumped into reservoirs.
“This is not a mandatory water restriction order, just an appeal for people to use water wisely so we can continue to meet customer demand,” said Joe Pajor, co-interim Director of Wichita Public Works & Utilities.
City Public Works & Utilities crews are tapping into additional wells to fill reservoirs to meet Friday’s peak demand. The four-hour power outage comes at time when the area is enduring near-record, high-water demands amid an extended heat wave.
The City expects to meet the high water demand if no further power outages occur.
