Emporia to Santa Fe will shut down
A public information meeting regarding the reconstruction of St. Francis, from Douglas to Second Street, is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Wichita Transit Maintenance Center, 777 E. Waterman.
The project is slated to begin the week of September 6, 2011. Construction will require closure of Second Street from Emporia to Santa Fe during the first two and a half months of the project. Second Street traffic will be detoured to Douglas and Central.
One lane of traffic will remain open on St. Francis and on First Street, and access to businesses will be maintained during the project.
The $2 million project will convert St. Francis to a two-way street from Douglas to Second Street, with new drainage, water and sewer line improvements, curb and gutter, sidewalks, and public amenities. Reconstruction of First and Second from St. Francis to Santa Fe will also be included. Intersections at First and Second will include upgraded traffic signals and crosswalks with brick pavers.
The conversion of this segment of St. Francis to two-way traffic will allow traffic exiting Intrust Arena events to access First and Second using St. Francis. Currently, arena traffic on St. Francis must use Douglas to leave the area.
A parking lot and green space will be built by Sedgwick County on the former Coleman site at St. Francis and Second Street this fall. The City’s goal is to complete its work on St. Francis and Second streets adjacent to the parking lot at about the same time as the parking lot is completed, currently projected for early December. The target completion date for the entire City project is April 1, 2012.
