Increases will address budget deficit

On Tuesday, Wichita Transit fares will increase as part of several budget-reduction measures. Fares for single rides will rise 50 cents to $1.75; disabled riders who have a Transit identification card will pay 85 cents and 10 cents for a transfer; paratransit van rides will increase $1 to $34 for a 10-ride card and $68 for a 20-ride card; and “Unlimited Ride” fares will go up as follows:

  • One Day Pass
    Increase from $3.50 to $5
  • Three Day Pass
    Increase from $10.50 to $15
  • Week Pass
    Increase from $18.50 to $25
  • Month Pass
    Increase from $70 to $90
  • Semester Pass
    Increase from $130 to $150

Saturday service will remain unchanged but cost-cutting measures include eliminating bus service on holidays and changing Transit Center business hours to 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The changes are expected to produce $182,884 in savings for 2011 and $540,246 in 2012 and 2013. Passes purchased before Tuesday will be honored.

“The increases will help meet a budget deficit,” Transit Director Mike Vinson said, adding that Saturday service will continue at the request of residents and the direction of the Wichita City Council. He also noted that Transit officials are working with a consultant on a plan for a sustainable and improved transit system. The plan should be completed in 2012.
