Leadership building topic of fifth lecture this Saturday

The City of Wichita will host a lecture on “Building New Leadership” from 11 a.m.-noon on Saturday, Sept. Sept. 17 in Century II Mary Jane Teall Theater, 225 W. Douglas. This meeting will give members and leaders of arts organizations tools that will help them build strong and enduring leadership teams within their own organizations. This is the fifth of six presentations included in the City’s “Arts & Culture Industry Lecture Series.” It is free and open to the public.

A number of national studies have indicated that the nonprofit sector will need 640,000 new senior executives – 2.4 times the number currently employed – over the next decade. John D’Angelo, manager of the City’s Arts & Cultural Services Division will lead discussion about the impending leadership crisis and provide information from a national level on how it can be adverted. The proactive steps include: Establishing ongoing practices to recruit and retain talented individuals who have or can develop necessary skills; developing an emergency succession plan; providing mentoring opportunities for younger employees; and recognizing that younger people are looking for alternative models of leadership that involve fewer hierarchies and more opportunities to effect meaningful change.

The purpose of the Arts & Culture Industry Lecture Series is to bring the community together to discuss how local arts organizations and artists can successfully adapt to the changing arts environment. The concluding lecture on “New Arts and Cultural Business Models,” will be held from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20 in Mary Jane Teall Theater.
