National League of Cities convenes in Phoenix

Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer and five members of the Wichita City Council will travel to Phoenix, Az., next month for the 2011 Congress of Cities & Exposition.

The Wichita delegation will join several thousand elected officials and city staff for the Nov. 9-12 annual conference. Scheduled to attend are Mayor Brewer, Vice Mayor Lavonta Williams and Council Members Jeff Longwell, Janet Miller and James Clendenin.

Also scheduled to attend are three members of the Wichita Mayor’s Youth Council, who will attend Youth Delegate sessions that are part of the NLC Congress agenda. They include Jordan Burns, junior at Kapaun Mt. Carmel; Dalton Glasscock, junior at Maize South High School, and Melody Munsell, junior at Wichita Northeast High School. The Youth Delegates expenses are covered through a grant from Spirit AeroSystems.

The Congress of Cities will feature four concurrent conferences on the topics of Your City’s Families, Green Cities, Economic Development and Infrastructure. Each of these conferences will incorporate keynote speakers, workshops and peer networking sessions.

The NLC Congress will also explore the impact that immigration has on communities and constructive local action in cities across the country across all conference programming. With Phoenix as the host city for the conference, NLC delegates will have an opportunity to highlight the need for comprehensive immigration reform at the federal level.

The National League of Cities is the nation’s oldest and largest organization devoted to strengthening and promoting cities as centers of opportunity, leadership and governance. NLC is a resource and advocate for 19,000 cities, towns and villages, representing more than 218 million Americans.
