Indian Center recognized by Wichita Public Schools

Wichita Public Schools recently presented the Mid-America All-Indian Center (MAAIC) with a 2011 District-Wide Good Apple Award to recognize its work with American Indian Youth. For the past four years, MAAIC has partnered with the district’s Native American Indian Education Program to provide cultural and educational programs at its facility. Bobbi Meairs, chair of the MAAIC Board of Trustees, accepted the award on behalf of the center during a Dec. 5 event hosted by the USD 259 Board of Education.

In 2011, MAAIC served nearly 1,400 American Indian students and their parents. The center hosted a variety of lunches, field trips, Saturday learning opportunities, tutoring programs and summer camps that not only focused on improving academics, but also on connecting the youth with their American Indian heritage.

The Good Apple Award program recognizes employees, volunteers and school partners who provide exemplary service to the Wichita School District and its students. Twice each year, principals and selection committees review nominations and select award recipients.

This is the first time that MAAIC has received a Good Apple Award.
