City of Wichita Burn Ban Lifted

Brad Crisp, Fire Marshal | | (316) 268-4466

Effective immediately, outdoor open burning will be allowed within the city limits, in accordance with local and state laws. Residents may now use outdoor fire places, cooking grills and similar items.

The ban was placed following a recommendation by the city of Wichita Environmental Initiatives Office due to high levels of ozone in Sedgwick County, which have returned to levels below the federal standards.

Should ozone levels become elevated again, a ban may be reinstated by recommendation of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the city of Wichita’s Environmental Initiatives Office.

Ozone continues to be the number one air pollutant problem for the City of Wichita. In the last three years, Wichita has experienced high levels of ozone due to burning that caused exceedances of the national ozone standard. These high levels have an effect on area health and Wichita’s economy.

For more information regarding the lifted burn ban, please contact Fire Marshal Brad Crisp (268-4466) or Kay Johnson with Environmental Initiatives (268-4251).
