Cowtown getting ready for an old-fashioned block party

Bring the family and plan on spending the day at Old Cowtown Museum this Saturday, Oct. 6, for the 35th Annual County Fair. From 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., there will be entertainment around every corner of Cowtown’s grounds, re-creating the atmosphere of a real 1870’s-style community block party. Regular admission rates will be charged (see below). Cowtown is located at 1865 W. Museum Blvd.

Throughout the day, children and adults will have their pick of activities and entertainment that include: melodrama theater performances; Vince Vega the juggler, fire eater and stilt walker, midway games, wheelbarrow, sack, push lawn mower and three-legged races, tug-of-war competitions, live music and a petting zoo. And no county fair would be complete without lots of food – hot dogs, candy, chips, sarsaparilla and more.

Four special events on the County Fair’s lineup include:

  • Youth Talent Contest, 11:30 a.m., Empire House
Youth between ages of 5-12 can sign up that day to dazzle the audience with singing, dancing or whatever unique talent they possess.
  • Free Ice Cream Social and Mock 1872 Presidential Debate, 12:30 p.m., Gazebo behind Saloon
Mock candidates will address the public as free ice cream is scooped out to hungry fair-goers.
  • Cutest Baby Contest, 2:30 p.m., Train Depot
The contest is open to anyone who wants to show off their little ones ages 6-18 months. Just show up to participate.
  • Vintage Baseball Tournament, all day, Farm Field near DeVore Family Farm
Five teams representing Wichita, Jetmore, Emporia, and Strong City will compete for the Vintage Baseball crown using 19th century rules and competing in period reproduction uniforms.
