Mayor, Council to Attend NLC Conference

National League of Cities convenes Nov. 28-Dec. 1 in Boston

Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer and three members of the Wichita City Council will travel to Boston, MA, this week for the National League of Cities f(NLC) 2012 Congress of Cities & Exposition.

Consequently, there will be no weekly meeting of the City Council Tuesday, Nov. 27. The Council will next meet on Tuesday, Dec. 4, at 9 a.m. as regularly scheduled.

Traveling to the NLC event with Mayor Brewer are Vice Mayor Janet Miller and Council Members Lavonta Williams and James Clendenin. City Manager Robert Layton will accompany the Council Members.

Also scheduled to attend are three members of the Wichita Mayor’s Youth Council, who will attend Youth Delegate sessions that are part of the NLC Congress agenda. They include Ayron Lewallen, junior at Northeast Magnet High School; Akim Richards, sophomore at Maize High School, and Krystian Fish, junior at Northwest High. Jason Earl, management fellow in the City Manager’s office, will supervise the Mayor’s Youth Council delegation.

The Congress of Cities and Exposition will be held at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center Nov. 28 through Dec. 1. The event brings together local leaders from cities across the United States. Conference participants will find a range of learning and networking opportunities highlighting successful programs from the City of Boston and communities across the country.

The Congress of Cities program will focus on three overarching strategies for cities: Promoting Strong Local Economies, Building Sustainable Communities and Strengthening Neighborhoods and Families. Each of the strategies will be explored through keynote addresses, workshops, peer networking sessions, mobile workshops, leadership training seminars, the City Showcase, and the Exhibit Hall. Before and after the main conference programming, NLC will offer the traditional governance activities, state municipal league activities and meetings of NLC committees, councils and constituency groups.

The National League of Cities is the nation’s oldest and largest organization devoted to strengthening and promoting cities as centers of opportunity, leadership and governance. NLC is a resource and advocate for 19,000 cities, towns and villages, representing more than 218 million Americans.
