Academy Award® Shorts a Wichita Public Library Tradition

The Wichita Public Library will host its 27th annual preview of Academy Award®-nominated short films Feb. 16-23. The animated, live action and documentary shorts will be available for viewing during several screenings. All showings are free, including showings at the 21st Street Warren Theatre and the Orpheum Theatre.

“This year’s nominated short films range from light-hearted to heart-wrenching stories,” said Ben Ropp, who is organizing this year’s Academy Award® Shorts event. “Some of this year’s shorts offer unique glimpses into situations that most people only read about in the news, such as growing up in Afghanistan, Somalia or Rwanda, or living in the United States as an undocumented immigrant.”

To qualify as a short subject for Academy Award® consideration, films must be less than 40 minutes in running time (including all credits). Shorts are typically not rated and may not be suitable for all audiences.

Film fans may see the shorts from all three categories at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Warren Theatre, 9150 N. 21st St. (21st & Tyler), or at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Orpheum Theatre, 200 N. Broadway. Space is limited and is first come, first seated.

Showings at three branch libraries will feature the animated and live action categories:

  • 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, Alford Branch Library, 3447 S. Meridian
  • 12 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, Evergreen Branch Library, 2601 N. Arkansas
  • 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, Maya Angelou Northeast Branch Library, 3051 E. 21st

Animation shorts will be screened at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19 at the Westlink Branch Library, 8515 Bekemeyer.

Documentary shorts will be screened at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at the Rockwell Branch Library, 5939 E. 9th.
