City to Hold Public Meeting on Grant Funds

Mary K. Vaughn | | (316) 462-3795

Grants hearing scheduled for Thursday

A Wichita City Council-appointed committee formed to review the use of federal grant funds for 2013-14 will hold a public hearing from 3 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21 in the first floor board room at City Hall, 455 N. Main.

The meeting, which is part of the City of Wichita public input strategy, will include Housing and Community Services Department staff. Residents are invited to attend the meeting to offer feedback to the committee. The meeting will include presentations by agencies submitting proposals for 2013-2014 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds. CDBG funds support recreation and crime prevention services for youth, shelter services for families fleeing domestic violence and new housing development services such as the Home Investment Partnerships (HOME) program.

This marks the fifth year of CDBG and HOME funding under the 2009-2013 Consolidated Plan. In 2012, CDBG-funded programs served 4,052 youth in crime prevention and enrichment programs, supported 581 victims of domestic violence. HOME funds were used by Community Housing Development Organizations toward construction costs of eight single-family homes.

The City is anticipating an 8% reduction in funding for 2013-14. CDBG and HOME funds are allocated to the City by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) based on community indicators in Wichita and based on Congressional appropriations. Information gathered during the public hearing will help determine funding recommendations that City Manager Robert Layton review and forward to the City Council in March.
