Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer and Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer are backing their Final Four basketball teams with a high-proof and mouth-watering friendly wager on Saturday’s game.
The two mayors placed their wagers during a Thursday phone call. Mayor Brewer is backing the Wichita State Shockers with a selection of top-quality Sterling Silver steaks, compliments from Wichita-based Cargill Meat Solutions. Mayor Fischer is countering with a fully-stocked bar of Kentucky bourbon.
Mayor Brewer’s basket includes a selection of Cargill’s famed Sterling Silver premium filet mignon, New York strip and boneless ribeye steaks. A case of Brewer’s Best Bar-b-que Sauces (mild, hot and sweet) goes with the basket.
Mayor Brewer added the barbeque sauces to “take the sting” out of Louisville’s loss to Wichita State.
“I don’t want to leave Mayor Fischer disappointed and empty handed, so I will ship my barbeque sauce for him to enjoy," Mayor Brewer said.
The mayors made the friendly wager today over the telephone and both spoke with confidence regarding their team’s chances.
“I’m so confident of a Cardinal win that I’m willing to wage a fully-stocked bourbon bar on this critical game,” Fischer said.
Fischer’s basket includes some of the state’s best-known brands -- Woodford Reserve, Maker’s Mark, Wild Turkey, Jim Beam, Four Roses, Evan Williams and Town Branch. All those bourbons are stops on the famed Kentucky Bourbon Trail, a tour of the state’s seven signature distilleries. The basket also includes T-shirts, hats, bourbon candles and glasses and a silver flask. If the Shockers win, Louisville’s basket will be donated to a charity to be determined later.
Just to make sure Mayor Fischer understood the wager, the phone call ended with Council Members Pete Meitzner, Jeff Longwell and James Clendenin singing “You don’t want to go to war with the Shockers.”
