Temporary Bridge Closures on 10th and 15th Streets over the I-135 Drainage Canal

4/10/2013
Gary Janzen, City Engineer | 316-268-4450

The 10th Street and 15th Street bridges that span the Wichita Drainage Canal along I-135 will be temporarily closed beginning April 15.  They will remain closed for a three-week period, during which City engineers will study the effect on traffic in neighboring areas.

The purpose is to test whether the structures can be converted to less costly pedestrian bridges.  Current daily traffic on the two bridges is only 350 vehicles on 10th Street and 225 vehicles on 15th Street.

During the closures, travelers can cross the drainage canal at the four other bridges located within a half mile.  These include bridges at 9th, 11th, 13th and 17th Streets.  Those four bridges would remain open to vehicular traffic should the 10th Street and 15th Street structures be converted into pedestrian bridges.

A community meeting was held on April 4 to generate feedback from neighborhood residents, who also received a door hanger publicizing the event.  City engineering staff also presented the plan during a community breakfast on April 6.  Future public comment will be solicited during the District 1 Advisory Board meeting on May 6, which will take place between 6:30 and 8 p.m. at the Atwater Neighborhood City Hall, 2755 E. 19th Street.
