Day of events planned for April 13
The Wichita Public Library has announced the schedule for this weekend’s anniversary celebration at the Lionel Alford Regional Library.
Special events will begin at 10:15 a.m. with “Alford’s Architectural Design,” a presentation by building architect Kirk Jurgensen about the elements of the building design that reflect the life and community contributions of Lionel Alford.
At 11 a.m., Lionel Alford, Jr. will present a biographic sketch of the life of this father and share from his perspective how his father’s achievements are reflected in the design of the library. Mr. Alford is the author of several books which will be available at the conclusion of the program for signing.
Newbery-winning author Clare Vanderpool will highlight afternoon events as she speaks about her newest book, Navigating Early. Her talk, which begins at 2:30 p.m., will be followed by a book signing made possible by Watermark Books.
Teens ages 12-17 are invited to the Library from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. to create commemorate paving stones that will become part of a new pathway in front of the Alford branch.
Throughout the day, visitors can:
- Make their own “Geek the Library” posters (courtesy of the Friends of the Wichita Public Library).
- Dress as a favorite children’s book character to be entered into a costume contest.
- Bring a camera for a photo opportunity with Clifford the Big Red Dog.
- Design a birthday card for the Library.
