Grand-opening scheduled for new trails system
A grand-opening ceremony for a new bike-and-hike trail system at Air Capital Memorial Park is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 18.
Air Capital Memorial Park (9500 W. Kellogg) is east of Maize Road on the eastbound frontage road. During the past year, the Kansas Single Track Society, a volunteer organization made up of off-road riders, partnered with Wichita Park & Recreation to transform the seldom-used park with the addition of a new trail system designed for multiple levels of off-road cyclists and hikers.
“The trail will provide a great opportunity for off-road cyclists to utilize rustic trails in a west-side park with easy access from west Kellogg,” said Council Member Jeff Blubaugh. “The creation of the trails would not be possible without the hard work of Kansas Single Track Society members. Their volunteers logged more than 400 hours clearing brush, creating trails, removing hazards and cleaning the park to create an off-road experience for cyclists as well as pedestrians.”
Lee Engler, owner of Lee’s Bike Shop, spearheaded volunteers who transformed the 10-acre park - abundant with tall trees, wild undergrowth and materials from the improvement of Highway 54 and other projects - into two miles of challenging, unpaved trails. The volunteers are bicycle riders and neighbors who have yearned for a rustic area to ride bikes within Wichita city limits. Many other Wichita residents and local businesses volunteered time, tools and supplies in the construction of the trail system.
