The City of Wichita Purchasing Division has won the National Purchasing Institute’s annual Achievement of Excellence in Procurement Award for 2013.

The award is given to organizations that demonstrate excellence in the procurement process, including activities involving the selection of suppliers and the purchase of goods and services. The City of Wichita was only one of three government agencies in Kansas and only one of 58 cities in the United States to receive the 2013 award.

Vice Mayor Pete Meitzner recognized purchasing employees at Tuesday’s City Council meeting, citing the quality and quantity of their work which he said is often performed under the scrutiny of the public and media.

The National Purchasing Institute’s excellence rating is achieved when an organization obtains a high score on a standard rating system, which is designed to measure innovation, professionalism, e-procurement, productivity, and leadership attributes of the procurement function.

Each year the ratings criteria is enhanced and expanded for organizations seeking eligibility for the award. Led by Purchasing Manager Melinda Walker, the City of Wichita Purchasing Division strives to continue improving outcomes and procurement functions in order to excel in government public purchasing.  The division has received the purchasing institute’s excellence award for 13 consecutive years.
