Wichita Airfares Drop Second Quarter

11/18/2013
Valerie Wise, Air Service & Business Development Manager | 316-946-4700
Airfares at Wichita Mid-Continent Airport (ICT) dropped 3.6% during the second quarter of 2013 compared with a year ago, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.  The average second quarter fare at ICT was $396.30, a 32% decrease from 2000.

The U.S. average price of an airline ticket decreased to $378 during the second quarter of 2013, a 3.6 percent from the average ($392) a year ago.

Average fares are reported based on domestic itinerary fares, which consist of round-trip tickets unless the customer does not purchase a return trip, in which case a one-way fare is measured.  Average second quarter fares at regional airports include Oklahoma City ($407.60), Tulsa ($437.34), and Kansas City ($365.09).

“This is great news for Wichita travelers,” Valerie Wise, the Air Service Manager said. “This proves that in many cases, Wichita’s fares are very competitive with regional airports, and not worth the long drive to a larger airport.”

The second quarter report includes the impact of one month of service from Southwest Airlines - which entered the Wichita market earlier in 2013 - and one month without AirTran Airways service.
