Kansas Aviation Museum exhibit to open in Main Gallery
CityArts will host the opening of three new art exhibitions from 5-9 p.m. on Final Friday, Jan. 31. The public is invited to attend this free event. CityArts is one of many venues downtown that participate in Final Friday to celebrate the work of local and regional artists. CityArts is located at 334 N. Mead in Old Town Square.
Main Gallery: “Aviation History on Display,” an exhibition by the Kansas Aviation Museum
The exhibit gives visitors an opportunity to relive Wichita’s early days in the 1940s and ’50s as the Air Capital of the World. The largest piece in the exhibit is a full-size 1950s-era Pretty Prairie Special airplane. The show also includes pictures from the Kansas Aviation Museum collection, scale models of iconic Kansas and Wichita planes and a partially complete wing from a rare Wichita-built airplane known as the Watkins Skylark.
Main Hall Gallery: “Unveiled 365,” multimedia works by Ju-Lynda Vaughn
Themes of spirituality, the underground, modern society and the African culture can be found throughout Vaughn’s signature ink and colored-pencil works. This Wichita artist has numerous works in private collections in Kansas, Colorado, Texas, Indiana, Canada and Ireland.
Balcony Gallery: “Courage,” portraits by Tamara Cummings
Cummings’ collection of drawings was inspired by the courage, determination, creativity and voice of those who had a strong impact on the 1970s. This is her second time exhibiting at CityArts. In 2012 as a senior at Wichita Northeast Magnet High School, she competed in the Fourth District 2012 Congressional Art Competition at CityArts that was sponsored by the Office of Congressman Mike Pompeo. Her self-portrait created with China marker on black illustration board won first place and was exhibited at the U.S. Capital for a year alongside other state winners.
All exhibits will be on display Jan. 31 through Feb. 22. Admission is free to CityArts’ exhibition galleries that are open 9 a.m.-9 p.m., Monday-Thursday; 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Friday; 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Final Friday; and 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday. For more information, call 316-350-3245.
