Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer and three City Council members will join other Kansas local officials at the annual Congressional City Conference March 8-12 in Washington, D.C.

The Congressional City Conference is the annual legislative meeting of the National League of Cities, designed to inform municipal leaders about federal policy issues while providing an opportunity for city leaders to bring local concerns to their federal elected officials.

More than 2,000 local leaders will meet with experts to discuss the nation’s need for job creation, economic growth and infrastructure investment during the conference.

Joining Mayor Brewer will be Council members Lavonta Williams, James Clendenin and Jeff Blubaugh.  City Manager Robert Layton will also attend.

During the conference, Council Member Williams will chair the Community & Economic Development Committee, which is responsible for developing policy positions on issues involving housing, community and economic development, land use, recreation and parks, historic preservation, and international competitiveness.

Mayor Brewer serves on the NLC Advisory Council and the Large City Council. Council members will also attend various training and information sessions on the NLC conference agenda.

Along with interacting with fellow local officials during the annual conference, the Wichita contingent will also spend time with the area’s Congressional delegation, including Sens. Pat Roberts and Jerry Moran and staff members for 4th District Congressman Mike Pompeo.

The National League of Cities (NLC) is dedicated to helping city leaders build better communities. Working in partnership with the 49 state municipal leagues, NLC serves as a resource to and an advocate for the more than 19,000 cities, villages and towns it represents. More than 2,000 municipalities of all sizes pay dues directly to NLC and actively participate as leaders and voting members in the organization.

Conference objectives for delegates include:

  • Connect with Congress and the Administration to ensure that America's cities and towns have a strong voice in the federal policy debates;
  • Hear the latest political news affecting cities from leaders on both sides of the aisle, and
  • Learn how new federal laws and regulations will impact local communities.
