Event launches Cowtown’s spring/summer season

Cowtown is kicking off its spring/summer season with Civil War Day from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, April 26. Civil War Day gives adults and children a glimpse into the daily lives of Union and Confederate soldiers and their families during this pivotal time in U.S. history. Regular admission rates apply. Cowtown is located at 1865 W. Museum Blvd.

Civil War Day is an annual event that immerses visitors in the time period through realistic soldier campsites, medical units, battles and the sounds of cannon and rifle fire around every corner. The authenticity of Civil War Day is made possible by Civil War reenactment groups that include:

Union
8th Kansas Volunteer Infantry
McLain’s Independent Artillery Battery
3rd Independent Kansas Light Artillery, Battery B
2nd Kansas Company C
Verdigris Militia
Confederate
9th Texas Infantry - Red River Battalion
4th Arkansas Infantry

New additions to the one-day event include presentations by guest lecturers. Marla Matkin, an independent scholar and performer from Hill City, Kan., will speak about “Victorian Fun and Frivolity.” Cynthia Naughton, who works as a hairstylist/make-up artist for Kansas history films produced by Hutchinson-based Lone Chimney Films, will discuss “Ladies Hairstyles of the Period.”
