Volunteers at the 13th annual Arkansas River Trash Round Up collected 2.6 tons of trash from more than four miles of river through downtown Wichita on Saturday.
The event was kicked off by a City Proclamation of Arkansas River Trash Round Up Day, presented by Council Member Jeff Longwell.
“A heart-felt congratulations goes out to all the participants for a job well done,” Longwell said.
Throughout the morning, 663 bright yellow shirts dotted the Arkansas riverbank. The hard-working volunteers removed 430 bags of litter from Wichita’s largest waterway.
This year the Round Up challenged local schools to a friendly competition. The school with the highest percentage of student participants will be honored on Friday with the first ever “Most Volunteers” award.  The 2014 winner is Goddard High School. Goddard High had 72 volunteers at the event, 9% of the total student population. Goddard High will be presented with the award at 11:30 a.m. on Friday at Goddard High School, 2500 199th St, Goddard, KS. The top five high schools were Goddard, Eisenhower, Wichita Northwest, Wichita South, and Maize South.
Local businesses also supported the clean up by sending more than 260 volunteers. The businesses with the highest number of volunteers were Cargill, Spirit, Protection One, PolyOne, McConnell Air Force Base, Johnson Controls and Weigand-Omega.
Event sponsors made this event and celebration lunch a great success: Cargill, Spirit, Ducks Unlimited, City of Wichita, Dillons Food Stores, Pepsi, Bimbo Bakeries USA, Davis-Moore Chevrolet, US Logo Inc., Waste Connections Inc., The Party Express Bus LLC, Success NationaLease, Envision and American Rivers.
The Arkansas River Trash Round Up planning team hopes to see even more schools, businesses and individuals at the 2015 Round Up next year.
