City Attorney Gary Rebenstorf will retire on Friday after 40 years with the City’s legal department including 23 as the Director of the Law Department.

Rebenstorf enjoyed a distinguished public service career, starting in 1976 as an Assistant City Attorney and becoming City Attorney in 1991. He holds the distinction of serving longer in the position of City Attorney than any other individual.

“Gary has served as a key advisor to numerous Mayors, City Council Members, City Managers and Department Directors,” City Manager Robert Layton said. “He has also served as leader and mentor for a number of talented attorneys in the Law Department.”

As Director of Law, Rebenstorf oversaw the City’s legal department which is comprised of a civil and criminal division, 26 employees and a $2.5 million budget. The Civil Division provides legal advice, drafts and reviews contracts, renders legal opinions, and conducts litigation for the City. The Criminal Division prosecutes criminal, traffic, domestic violence and environmental cases in Municipal Court, as well as maintain office hours to assist citizens on a walk-in basis.

During Tuesday’s City Council meeting, Mayor Carl Brewer thanked Rebenstorf for his dedicated service to the City and his contributions to making the city a better place to live and work.

Deputy City Attorney Sharon Dickgrafe will serve as Interim City Attorney, Layton said, while a successor is sought through a national recruitment process. Dickgrafe received her Law degree from the University of Kansas in 1989 and started with the City’s Law Department in 1992. She has experience in private practice, City prosecution and departmental administration.
