Council Approves Sales Tax Ballot Question

Communications Team | 316-268-4351

The Wichita City Council today, Aug. 5, approved a one-cent, citywide sales tax question to be placed on the ballot of the General Election in November.

If approved by voters, the one-cent sales tax would generate $397.6 million over five years for four community priorities - job creation and retention efforts, a future water source, better street maintenance and an expanded transit system.

The four community priorities were identified by residents during nearly two years of community engagement efforts in the form of public meetings, neighborhood and stakeholder presentations, social media town halls and other community feedback opportunities.

The Council’s vote today followed public comments supporting and opposing the sales tax from residents, local groups and other stakeholders.
