Reducing the City's Carbon Footprint

Funding Program - Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG)
Funding Amount - $3,519,500

The goal of EECBG is to reduce energy use and fossil fuel emissions, and to improve energy efficiency.  Cities are encouraged to leverage the funds and initiate sustainable practices.   

Environmental Services has created a multiple approach strategy for improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions in Wichita.  Projects will increase the energy efficiency of municipal buildings, improve traffic flow and reduce emissions by providing alternative transportation.  A list of projects is available below.

*Job creation is provided by multiple agencies and contractors.  Information is updated every three months.

Funding Program - Midwest Region Alternative Fuels Project
Funding Amount - $738,000

The City has applied for a grant in conjunction with the Kansas City Regional Clean Cities Coalition.  The City's grant portion will be used to upgrade 18 replacement medium-duty trucks to diesel-electric hybrids.  The City's match is $1,980,000.  The Kansas City Regional Clean Cities Coalition and City of Wichita received notice of grant approval on August 26, 2009.  The next step is to receive approval for the City's share at the November 17, 2009, City Council meeting.  Click here to view the award notification.

Local Funding Through South Central Kansas Economic Development District

Funding Program - Kansas Weatherization Assistance Grants Funding Amount - $7,413,000 

Other grants are available to low-income families from the South Central Kansas Economic Development District.  Homeowners and renters are eligible for home energy improvement grants.  Eligible improvements include weather-stripping around windows and doors, sealing air and gas leaks, installing insulation and replacing refrigerators and repairing/replacing furnaces and air conditioners.  To learn more, go to the SCKEDD website.
