Sedgwick County Environmental Resources

The Department of Environmental Resources is responsible for protecting the environment through conservation of resources. Our department coordinates all components of solid waste management, promotes waste minimization, and provides environmental education for the citizens and businesses of Sedgwick County.

The mission of the Environmental Protection Agency is to protect human health and the environment. Since 1970, EPA has been working for a cleaner, healthier environment for the American people.

City of Wichita Air Quality
The Air Quality section monitors ambient air for criteria pollutants (carbon monoxide, ozone, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, lead, and particulate matter) in accordance with regulations set forth in the federal Clean Air Act.
Clean Air Act
The Clean Air Act is the law that defines EPA's responsibilities for protecting and improving the nation's air quality and the stratospheric ozone layer.
National Ambient Air Quality Standards
The Clean Air Act, which was last amended in 1990, requires EPA to set National Ambient Air Quality Standards (40 CFR part 50) for pollutants considered harmful to public health and the environment.

Household Hazardous Waste Facility
The HHW Facility is a place Sedgwick County residents can dispose of old chemicals and household hazardous waste free of charge. It offers a way to get rid of old chemicals and materials to help prevent them from getting into the waste stream and polluting the environment.

Stormwater Management's mission is to protect the health, safety, and welfare of our citizens by providing adequate drainage and flood control within the community and to reduce pollution of our nation's waterways by implementing a comprehensive stormwater quality management program.​

River City WRAPS (Watershed Restoration and Protection Strategy)
Under a grant agreement with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), RiverCity WRAPS is developing a Watershed Restoration and Protection Strategy (WRAPS) program for the Lower Arkansas River watershed within the city limits.
