The Big Belly, a new, solar-powered, self-compacting trash receptacle, is coming to Wichita.

The City of Wichita is participating in a trial period with the innovative trash receptacle that is described as more efficient and environmentally friendly than the standard trash receptacle.

During the trial period, the Big Belly will be placed at the downtown bus transit hub (214 S.Topeka) on the east side of the main building. This is a high volume trash disposal area due to the number of riders who wait in the area. The regular trash receptacle in the area is dumped nearly twice a day, and the Big Belly’s performance will be compared to this standard. The Big Belly can hold up to four times more than the standard trash receptacle.

The trial period is Jan. 8-16. During this time, the receptacle will be monitored, and maintenance schedules will be analyzed.

The Big Belly is a product of BigBelly Solar, formerly Seahorse Power Company. The Big Belly concept is to reduce pollution, and man-hours spent on servicing receptacles by cutting down the frequency of trash collection trips.

Cities that have invested in the Big Belly include Boston, Cincinnati, New York City, Tempe, AZ and San Antonio.
