Winners of the 2010 Clean Air and Sustainability Awards will be recognized by Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer at the Regional Energy Summit Friday morning at the Wichita State University Metroplex.

The award presentation is part of the two-day Energy Summit and Fair sponsored by the City of Wichita, Wichita State University and a variety of other local businesses and energy-related organizations. Friday’s session runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and includes sessions targeted at local businesses and government.

Mayor Carl Brewer will be presenting the awards during the morning General Session on Friday. The Friday Summit includes sessions for local businesses and government agencies. Saturday’s Community Day activities run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and feature energy-saving tips for the public along with numerous giveaways and drawings.

The award winners acknowledged at Friday’s event were selected by the City of Wichita and the Metro Air Quality Improvement Task Force.

They were selected for their efforts to improve and preserve air quality in the four-county metro area (Butler, Harvey, Sedgwick, and Sumner Counties) and for incorporating sustainability measures in their organizational structure.

Award winners include:

Maize USD 266 - The School District replaced gas-fueled turf equipment with clean diesel lawn equipment which resulted in a 50 percent reduction in fuel consumption along with reduced fuel emissions. The school district initiated energy efficiency measures by hiring a full time energy manager and investing in a computer controlled building energy monitoring system. The actions saved the district more than $1.5 million over the last four years.

Cessna Aircraft Company - The Company established an employee-driven Environmental Strategy Council in 2008 which initiated an energy and waste reduction program. The Council conducted energy audits which focused on maximizing boiler and freezer capacities, installed light occupancy sensors, upgraded thermostats, and met LEED standards for new construction. The company also implemented work consolidation practices and assessed after hour security patrols. The 2010 results included a five percent reduction in energy consumption, a 1.2 percent reduction in green house gas emissions and a 6 percent reduction in waste generation.

WDM Architects P. A. - The Company enhanced an existing paper recycling program focusing on a companywide paper reduction program. WDM also changed all company printer settings to incorporate a 30 percent post-consumer recycled content paper and required vendors to do the same. The result was a reduction of 43 reams of new paper, diversion of 1.83 tons of office paper to a recycling process and conservation of 7300KW hours of energy, 12,800 gallons of water, and 340 gallons of fuel. WDM also has initiated an electronic transfer of documents as opposed to paper mail resulting in a savings of one million square feet of paper and 5,000 gallons of jet fuel.
