City of Wichita employees are assisting with removal of tree debris in Hutchinson in the wake of the Dec. 18 ice storm there. About 18 City employees are scheduled to work through Feb. 8, collecting and removing tree branches from streets.
"We're glad to help," Chris Carrier, Director of Public Works for the City of Wichita, said. "It's an opportunity to help a neighboring city that's in need and to fulfill our role as a partner in this region. We've been on the receiving end in the past. Now we're in a position to help."
Wichita assistance includes 10 large dump trucks, two loaders, two skid steers and two vans for daily commuting. The equipment will remain in Hutchinson throughout the assistance effort. Employees are driving daily to Hutchinson, using City passenger vans.
Hutchinson officials will provide fuel and repairs for equipment. Crew labor and transportation costs will be tracked so that the City of Wichita can be reimbursed if disaster funds are approved for the ice-storm cleanup.
