The Wichita Police Department and Cox Communications have teamed up to alert the public to two issues of public safety that arise each spring, according to Lieutenant Darras Delamaide who is over the WPD Crime Prevention Unit.

“These new 30-second TV spots will soon begin airing on both City Channel 7 and on Cox Communications commercial channels on an as-available basis,” said Delamaide. “Our valuable partnership with Cox means more Wichitans will be informed about important public safety issues.”

One of the new spots urges citizens to use caution when driving and to keep a lookout for motorcycle riders. The other warns citizens to keep their garage doors closed, especially during the summer months when many people are out working in their yards.

“Motorcycle safety is everyone’s business, regardless of whether or not you ride a motorcycle. Motorcycles are usually hard to see, making it important for all drivers to use extra caution when changing lanes, pulling out into traffic or making a turn,” said Delamaide.

“When it comes to home security, it’s important to make sure you keep your garage door closed to keep burglars from stealing items from your garage or car. If you’re working in the yard burglars can also enter your home, or steal your garage door opener from your car and break into your home when you’re not there,” Delamaide said.

Delamaide urged citizens who have a garage door opening system to purchase inexpensive, programmable wireless keypads that can be easily installed to secure the garage while outside working.

For more information on these public safety issues, or for other crime prevention tips and programs, call the Crime Prevention Unit at 268-4101, or visit the Wichita Police Department Crime Prevention page online at www.wichitapolice.com. The public safety TV spots can also be viewed online on the City of Wichita website at www.wichita.gov, and on the WPD Crime Prevention page.
