Major improvement for West Wichita

Local and federal dignitaries will be on hand for a dedication of the Cowskin Creek Local Flood Protection Project at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28.

The ceremony will take place near the Cowskin Creek on a private road south from Maple Road between Maize Road and Tyler Road. (see photo map)

The value of the 18-month project was demonstrated during recent heavy rains. City officials estimate that flood levels were one foot or more below what they would have been without the recent improvements.

Wichita residential and business area in the Cowskin Creek Basin have suffered recurring flooding for years. The project includes channelization of a portion of Cowskin Creek with construction of an overbank area to divert floodwaters.

Congressman Todd Tiahrt, Mayor Carl Brewer, District 5 Councilmember Jeff Longwell and representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will make public comments during unveiling of a sign commemorating the project.
