Wichita Firefighters will wear pink T-shirts to increase awareness and help raise money for breast cancer. Beginning Thursday, Sept. 24, firefighters will be allowed to wear pink T-shirts on-duty instead of the traditional navy blue shirts for three consecutive 24-hour shifts. Representatives of the Fire Department and Susan G. Komen for the Cure will model the shirts at 11a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, at Fire Station #9, 350 S. Edgemoor.
The Wichita Firefighters Relief Association purchased shirts for every member of the Fire Department. Additional T-shirts will be donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Mid-Kansas. The public can purchase them for $20 on Sept. 26, the day of the 20th annual Susan G. Komen Wichita Race for the Cure. The shirts will be available near the starting area at Towne East Mall. Proceeds will be used to increase breast cancer awareness and support research, screening, education and outreach efforts.
“Over the last 20 years, new innovations in the treatment of the disease are helping breast cancer survivors live longer and perhaps see the day when this type of cancer no longer exists,” Wichita Fire Chief Ronald D. Blackwell said. “We want to do our part to support these efforts.”
The Wichita Firefighters Relief Association provides benefits for firefighters injured, disabled or killed in the line of duty. The firefighters are seeking to bring attention to a disease that has touched members of the department, their families, friends and acquaintances.
