“Stay Fire Smart! Don’t Get Burned!”
The 2009 Fire Prevention Week will be observed October 2-11 in the City of Wichita. To promote the campaign the Wichita Fire Department has scheduled a number of activities.
Old Cowtown Fire Safety Education Fair
Friday, Oct. 2nd, 9:00 a.m.
The department in conjunction with Old Cowtown will be hosting a safety event for all area grade schools. The event will allow students to learn about fire safety, watch a Heavy Rescue Demonstration, practice an escape out of a smoke filled room, plus tour the sites of Old Cowtown located at 1865 Museum Blvd.
Fifth Grade Fire Prevention Adventure at the Zoo
Tuesday, Oct. 6th, 10:00 a.m.
The department will join forces with other area fire departments and public services to host a safety event at the Sedgwick County Zoo. All 5th grade students throughout the city and county and surrounding areas will be invited to attend. The event allows students to interact with firefighters, safety personnel and participate in fire prevention and safety activities.
Health, Safety and Fitness Awareness Day
Wednesday, October 7th, 10 a.m., North Branch YMCA (330 N. Woodlawn)
he department will present a fire prevention program for all private and public schools located in the area. Students will practice life safety skill such as exiting from a smoked filled room and learn about the dangers of playing with matches and lighters. Students will also have an opportunity to dunk a firefighter. Health and wellness activities will also be presented by YMCA Staff.
Exploration Place Fire Expo
Thursday, October 8th, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
Adults, senior citizens and children will have an opportunity to take part in various fire safety programs. Local non-profit and risk reduction agencies will provide health and wellness information. The department will also display emergency equipment and attendees will have an opportunity to interact with firefighters.
Kansas State Fallen Firefighters Memorial
Sunday, October 11th, 1:30 p.m.
A memorial service will be held at the Kansas Firefighters Museum. The keynote speaker will be Kansas Lieutenant Governor Troy Findley. All Kansas firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty will be recognized. The museum located at 1300 South Broadway will also offer free admission.
