Oct. 18 run-walk event profits go to No More Hungry Kids campaign
Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer has announced that profits from the Oct.18 Mayor’s 5K Challenge will go to the No More Hungry Kids campaign, or www.nomorehungrykids.org, which is a local fundraiser to help the Kansas Food Bank provide weekend backpacks of food for children at local schools.
Register for the 5K Challenge at First Gear or at www.wichita.gov; registration cost is $15 for ages 15 and under; $20 for others; race-day registration cost is $25. Participants who finish before the Mayor will win an “I Beat The Mayor” T-shirt.
The Mayor’s 5K Challenge is a walk-or-run event associated with the annual Heart of America Marathon. The inaugural 5K Challenge starts at 9:45 a.m. in Old Town Plaza at 2nd and Mead. The 3.1-mile course winds through Wichita’s downtown, passing by Old Town, Intrust Bank Arena, the WaterWalk and other destinations (see attached map).
An awards ceremony begins at 10:45 a.m. in Old Town Square, where marathoners will also be finishing. The Mayor’s 5K Challenge medals will be given to the top three finishers in six age divisions.
The challenge is the kickoff of Mayor Brewer’s Community Health Initiative, which he announced during his 2009 State of the City Address.
“As we move into 2009, we need to think about our personal health,” Mayor Brewer said during the January speech. “Wichita must strive to be a healthy and compassionate community…Personal responsibility is as important as sound policy. We can all do a better job of making better choices regarding diet and exercise.”
Mayor Brewer is available for interviews regarding his training for the event.
