Honored by state fire chief’s association
Wichita Fire Chief Ronald D. Blackwell has been named Fire Chief of the Year by fire chiefs across the state of Kansas. Blackwell, who has headed the Wichita Fire Department (WFD) since 2007, was honored on Oct. 10 during the annual state fire chief’s conference in Manhattan.
Blackwell was recognized by his peers for his outstanding leadership as well as his commitment to the occupational health and safety of firefighters. During his tenure as Wichita’s fire chief, Blackwell has focused on firefighter safety, community outreach and maximizing existing resources.
Comments from his nomination included: “His commitment to safety is obvious and sincere. From day one he shared his vision. Today we are beginning to see the tangible results, a change in culture….Chief Ronald Blackwell has used his experiences and applied them.”
Prior to becoming WFD Fire Chief in October 2007, Blackwell served in Ann Arundel County Maryland and in Prince George's County as fire chief.
From 1975 to June 1999, Blackwell served in the Wichita Fire Department where he was deputy fire chief. Before joining WFD, Blackwell was an airport safety officer for Wichita Mid-Continent Airport and a fire protection specialist with the United States Air Force.
He has a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree in public education from Wichita State University. He is an executive fire officer graduate from the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
