Arts Council Names 2009 Art Awards

Ten Wichita individuals, cultural organizations and businesses will be recognized for their work to further the growth and development of arts in the Wichita area during the 40th annual Art Awards Dinner, sponsored by The Arts Council nonprofit organization. The event will be held on Thursday, Nov. 5 at the Mid-America All-Indian Center, 650 N. Seneca. A complete list of award winners is included below.

“These awards focus attention on the importance of the arts in our community that enhance the quality of life for all citizens,” said Dr. Sharon Mallory, chair of The Arts Council board of directors.

The festivities will begin with a reception at 5:30 p.m.; dinner will follow. Cynthia Rider, managing director of the Kansas City Repertory Theatre, will be the keynote speaker.

Tickets are $25 for Arts Council members and $30 per person for nonmembers. A table that seats 10 people may also be reserved for $250. To purchase tickets by phone using Visa or MasterCard, call (316) 462-2787, ext. 793. Checks may also be mailed by Oct. 31 to: Arts Council c/o CityArts, 334 N. Mead, Wichita, Kan., 67202. Tickets may be purchased in person at CityArts during business hours from now until Nov. 3 or from any Arts Council board member.

2009 Art Awards recipients are:

Individual Artist Award: Marilyn Grisham, The Fiber Studio
Given to an artist actively working in such categories as choreography, music composition, film/video, theatre, interdisciplinary/ performance art, two-dimensional visual art and/or three-dimensional visual art, who has shown outstanding achievement.

Arts Advocate/Individual Award: Jerry Martin, Lowell D. Holmes Museum of Anthropology
Given to an individual or couple dedicated to furthering the cause of an art form or the arts in general through promotional, volunteer, administrative, legislative or professional efforts.

Arts Organization Award: Wichita Public Library
Given to a public, not-for-profit organization that presents or provides arts opportunities to the Wichita community and region.

Burton Pell Award (for Music): Dr. Thomas Wine, Wichita State University
An award created in memory of Mr. Burton Pell, a longtime member and past president of The Arts Council. Given to an outstanding individual in music.

Special Project Award: Terri Dozal, Utility Pole Art
Given to an individual, neighborhood, business, corporation or group that has provided support for a single event or project.

Special Recognition Award: Lois Crane, Wichita Art Museum Library
Given in recognition of Lois Crane’s work to develop and maintain the library at the Wichita Art Museum, where she was a full-time volunteer for 30 years.

Business Award: Belford Electric
Given to a business or foundation providing broad-based and continued support of the arts through its operation or other foundation funds.

Youth Recognition Award: Jenny Wine
Given to a high school and/or middle school student who has shown outstanding achievement and development in the arts.

Chris Cherches Award: West Kellogg Project
A new award presented by the Design Council to honor excellence in public art. The award is in honor of Chris Cherches, Wichita’s city manager for 18 years, who was a strong advocate for the arts in this community.

Gordon W. Evans Award:
The DeVore Family – Bill and Alta DeVore and Richard and Ginny DeVore
Given to a patron(s) demonstrating outstanding leadership and special support for the arts. This award is presented at the discretion of The Arts Council.

The Arts Council was officially designated by City of Wichita in 1999 to serve as the focal point for coordinating and promoting the visibility of all cultural arts in the community. Working closely with the City’s Department of Arts and Cultural Services, its mission is to advance and promote arts and culture in the Wichita community through advocacy, leadership, education and collaboration.
